Client: Torres Strait Regional Authority
Project Value: $1.9 Million
Description:
Black & More managed the the concept development and construction of a new government building for Sea Rangers and Environmental Officers on Thursday Island. The building, now known as "Powuppoon Haus", achieves a 5-star energy rating and was designed to reflect the Torres Strait lifestyle, with the new space providing opportunities to represent local culture through built-in art & garden areas.
Powuppoon is the traditional Kaurareg name for a large pheasant-like bird. The Powuppoon is considered to be “passionate about its surroundings, determined, steadfast and a conservationist, always seeking to preserve natural things".
Construction was undertaken with an Indigenous participation rate of 90%, which is the first time a participation rate this high has been mandated in a federal government agency building contract.
